The 8th International Wheat conference (8IWC) was held from June 1-4, 2010, in the historic city of St. Petersburg, Russia. It was organized by International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and All-Russian N.I. The IWC is held every five years. The last conferences took place in Ankara, Turkey (1996), Budapest, Hungary (2000) and La Plata, Argentina (2005). Previous conferences aroused a great interest among the wheat researchers from all over the world and proved the necessity of further discussions on wheat productivity.

Northern capital was not accidentally chosen as a Conference Venue: Saint-Petersburg hosted the First World Grain Forum in 2009. The President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev in his speech during this event highlighted the significance of plant research.

The success of the 8th International Wheat Conference showed that Saint-Petersburg can become a worthy market player in the world event industry.
